data-naming

Data Naming and describing is critical for overall success.  Done correctly, it helps you:

  • Define and achieve common business goals
  • Reduce time to market
  • Maximize customer satisfaction
  • Accurately disclose the company’s financial status to stockholders
  • Minimize misconceptions among business functions that could diminish company performance

This course illustrates basic principles and standards for describing and naming company data assets. You want to make sure that all entities in your enterprise understand what a piece of data is by assigning a name that resounds with all and a description that everyone understands the same way.

Course materials include a Data Description and Naming document that suggests naming standards, procedures and guidelines for your company.

In the class, you will follow these standards to create precise and comprehensible data descriptions. From these you will derive standard and abbreviated names for use in data dictionaries, data warehouses, data marts and the data structures that support business applications.

Working through exercises and creating examples with others helps you see how others think and helps you create better names while you feed off the varied ideas.
